.. Orcas live is very close knit and bonded social groups; this social structure is very complex. It begins with the Community, such as the "Southern Community" that our research studies; next is the Clan association which is comprised of pods with similar dialects; the next largest group is known as a subpod which is made up of one or more matrilineal groups which typically travel together at all times and the smallest social structure is the matrilineal group - this is the basic social unit of orcas - and is comprised of a mother and her offspring. Each pod has their own distinctive communication dialect, making it possible to identify a particular pod or whale, such as Lolita, Corky or Keiko, with their particular family. ..
Orcas live in ALL oceans of the world. The greatest concentration of orcas is in the Pacific Northwest, where our study is located. There are two resident communities, the Southern and the Northern, comprising a total of approximately 300 resident orcas.

Currently There are 48 known Orcas in captivity. Orcas are the TOP predators in the ocean and the only enemy that they have are humans.
